The project aims to increase household incomes, in 8 last-mile villages, the Nyamabare cluster, form the Rubanda Disstrict, in the western region of Uganda. It also aims to facilitate civic engagement and accelerate socio-economic development. More specifically, it includes the adoption of improved agricultural practices at household level, the diversification of agriculture for consumption and sale, the development of household assets through the provision of livestock, the establishment of financial literacy foundations at household level, the development of community savings and local access to credit, the adoption of improved water and sanitation practices, and improved access to healthcare and water.
Raising the Village (RTV) is a Canadian charity founded in 2012. It aims to provide assistance to smallholder families in last-mile rural Ugandan villages to help them address the key barriers affecting their socio-economic development.

Uganda’s economy has continued to post strong growth, by many developing country standards. It nevertheless remains a very poor country and far from the middle-income status it aspires to. Although the poverty rate has greatly declined from 39% in 2002 to 19% in 2012, the strong population growth has meant that the absolute number of poor people has remained the same. One in three children has no food to eat during the school day and 27% of children under five are stunted. Agriculture accounts for 25% of the country’s GDP and employs 77% of the adult population. However, the productivity of smallholder farmers remains low due to lack of access to services such as credit and insurance and reliance on traditional farming methods.
