Meet Maante

Maante Sumare is a 16-year-old girl from Sekenani village. Maante studies at Emarti Primary school where she has been one of the beneficiaries of the mentorship component of the project led by CHASE Africa.

Maante participated in one of the adolescent sexual health trainings in her village facilitated by the trained peer mentors. According to Maante she learnt so much that she didn’t know about sexual and reproductive health.

I had my first periods at 13 years and I didn’t know what was happening to my body. I relied on my friends at school for information. However, since I attended the first training in our village I learnt so much on menstruation health management. I got to know different types of sanitary pads and how they are used. Before I only knew of the disposal one but after the training I learnt about the reusable sanitary towel and how use it and ensure it is hygienic. In addition, the peer mentors taught us the different types of child rights. I learnt how to report a rape case and any form of abuse. I learnt a lot about Female Genital Mutilation. Thank you for the making me understand my body.”
