Sustainable environmental protection

The project aimed to increase community awareness access to sustainable environmental protection resources in Monduli District, Arusha Region, Northern Tanzania. The project was successfully completed and the community's knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards environmental protection were assessed.

Prior to the project, 73% of students and 67% of community members had never heard about environmental protection activities. After the drama performances, 100% of respondents could list the benefits of trees, and attitudes towards cutting down trees changed significantly, with only 30% reporting it was acceptable. 87% of children and 53% of community members reported changing their practices and actively participating in tree planting. At the start of the project, selected schools had no feeding program or kitchen, resulting in a high rate of student absenteeism; this changed significantly once the implementation of feeding programs. The community identified drought, soil erosion, and overgrazing as the biggest threats to the environment. Since the project, the use of eco stoves increased by 52%, reducing dependence on firewood.

Overall, the project has led to greater awareness of environmental protection and good practices in the community. Community members remain committed to environmental activities, such as tree planting and using eco-friendly stoves. The government is now committed to protecting the environment in Monduli district council.

Tanzania has experienced high and relatively stable growth rates over the past decade. At the same time, Tanzania is lagging in primary school completion, maternal health, poverty eradication, malnutrition and environmental sustainability. While the poverty rate has recently declined, the absolute number of the poor has not changed due to the fast pace of population growth (3% per annum). It has made little progress towards reducing extreme hunger and malnutrition, particularly in rural areas. However, scrapping contributions for primary and secondary school has drastically increased primary school enrolment.
