Supporting children from nomadic communities
23 September 2025
RAIN is currently supporting 97 lower secondary school students in five schools across Aouderas, Dabaga, Ingall, Dannet, and Aderbissinat in the vast Agadez Region of Niger. To ensure each student's success, a collaborative effort is made involving schoolteachers, RAIN mentors, and homestay mothers. This support network ensures that students have access to necessary resources and assistance. Despite navigating significant uncertainty, RAIN's rural and nomadic partners consistently display remarkable resilience and steadfast dedication to supporting the young students.
RAIN is on track to achieve the following outcomes by the end of the project:
- Increase enrolment, attendance, and retention at area schools: 97 students, exceeding the original goal of 80 students, from rural/isolated communities were enrolled in schools.
- None of the homestay students have identified distance or lack of support from their homestay family as a barrier.
- Year-over-year enrolment decreased by just under 4% across partner schools.
- 100% of homestay students remained in attendance.
- 100% of eligible homestay students remained in the program year to year.
- Increase representation and inclusion of underrepresented groups: 48 girls were enrolled in area schools.
- 100% of homestay students came from under-represented communities, including ethnic minority groups (Tuareg and Fulani).
- Homestay students passed the national exams at 2.21x the regional rate.
The enrolment and retention outcomes reflect a slight increase compared to previous year thanks to RAIN’s efforts.
